The 7th Conference of the Pacific Rim Community Design Network: Awaji Landscape Planning and Horticulture Academy/University of Hyogo, September 11-14, 2010

The Pacific Rim Community Design Network returned to Japan more than ten years after the conference in Saitama in 1999. The theme of the 2010 conference was “Sustainable Communities, Sustainable Landscapes.” Using the exquisite setting of Awaji Landscape Planning & Horticulture Academy /the University of Hyogo on the island of Awajishima near Kobe, Japan, the conference examined the connections between the sustainability of local communities and the broader environment in the face of globalization. We invited papers and case studies that examined and compared movements across geographic locations that sought to sustain and improve the conditions of local communities and identities through place-based efforts and activism.
The 4-day event consisted of an all-day open symposium/workshop featuring demonstrations, exhibitions, and poster sessions with citizens, non-profit organizations, and professionals, a day of paper presentations and discussion, and a one-day tour of the landscape and community design activities on Awajishima.
